What Is HGH?
Human growth hormone (HGH / somatotropin) is a 191-amino-acid protein hormone secreted by the pituitary gland. It drives growth in childhood and regulates metabolism, body composition and tissue repair in adulthood.
Its Roles in the Body
- Triggers IGF-1 production in the liver, the mediator of most of its growth-related effects.
- Supports muscle mass and protein synthesis.
- Increases fat metabolism (lipolysis).
- Contributes to bone density and connective-tissue health.
Aging and HGH
HGH secretion peaks in adolescence and gradually declines with age — a process sometimes called “somatopause.” Because this decline is linked to age-related changes such as muscle loss, fat gain and slower recovery, it comes up often in longevity discussions.
The “Is More Better?” Paradox
Contrary to intuition, longevity biology paints an opposite picture for HGH. Some organisms with low GH/IGF-1 signaling (e.g. mice lacking a functional growth-hormone receptor, or humans with Laron syndrome) can show longer lifespan and resistance to certain diseases. So simplifications like “low HGH = fast aging” and “extra HGH = youth” are scientifically misleading.
HGH deficiency is a medical diagnosis requiring replacement therapy; but using HGH “to feel younger” in an adult with normal levels is an entirely different risk-benefit equation.
Risks and Controversies
Outside medical indications, unsupervised HGH use carries serious risks: insulin resistance, joint pain, edema, carpal tunnel syndrome, abnormal tissue growth and unknown long-term effects. The link between excessive IGF-1 signaling and certain cancers is also an area of research.
