What Is BPC-157?
BPC-157 is a 15-amino-acid synthetic peptide (a pentadecapeptide) derived from the partial sequence of a protective protein called Body Protection Compound, found in human gastric juice. It was first recognized in studies on gastric mucosal protection and has since become central to tissue-repair and recovery literature. A notable feature is that it remains relatively stable even in the acidic environment of gastric juice.
Mechanisms of Action
- Angiogenesis — may support new blood-vessel formation via the VEGFR2 and nitric-oxide (NO) pathway, improving oxygen and nutrient delivery to damaged tissue.
- Tendon and ligament repair — in animal models it has been observed to accelerate repair by regulating growth-factor receptors on fibroblasts.
- Nitric-oxide system — influences the NO balance that modulates vascular tone and blood flow.
- Inflammation balance — may support healing by dampening an excessive inflammatory response.
- GI protection — protective effects on the mucosal barrier and integrity have been reported in the gastrointestinal system it originates from.

Level of Evidence
The vast majority of data on BPC-157 is preclinical — that is, based on cell-culture and rodent (especially rat) models. Controlled clinical trials in humans are quite limited and there is no approved use.
Promising results in animal models do not generalize directly to humans; questions of dose, bioavailability and long-term safety remain open.
